Our next programs will begin in June 2016. You can register here.

The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion offers Online MSC (OMSC). OMSC has the same content as MSC programs offered in a classroom and is taught live by a certified MSC teacher. OMSC is ideal for those people who do not have access to MSC in their area, who have commitments or mobility issues that make it difficult to leave home to do a course, or who have already done MSC and would like a refresher.

The program is offered at different days and times in the week so that folks from all around the world can attend. CMSC offers scholarships so that hopefully everyone who wants to attend can. The course is run weekly for 10 consecutive weeks (there may be a break for a week, here and there, to accommodate holidays and teacher availability).

Class Size

Classes will be around 12 participants. Classes are small to allow plenty of time with the teacher, and so that everyone in the group has an opportunity to feel seen and heard throughout the course.

Content and Format

OMSC offers around 95% of the material from the MSC program developed by Chris Germer and Kristin Neff. Please see this page for information about the MSC course content.

OMSC offers:

  • pre-course reading/viewing material,
  • live sessions once weekly,
  • post-course reading/viewing material,
  • 24/7 online discussion board,
  • optional small group meetings between classes,
  • home practice suggestions,
  • email contact with the teacher (online one-to-one chats if necessary),
  • the opportunity to join online graduate groups to support ongoing practice.

Participants will be invited to view reading material and informational videos before each class so that our precious class time can be saved for meditations, exercises and group sharing. Classes are 2 hours long, however one session will be a 3-hour online retreat.

OMSC’s home is an online Learning Management System called Haiku, and we use a web conferencing platform called Zoom. After you register, we will support you in gaining access to both these tools and offer orientation sessions before the program starts.

There are no prerequisites for OMSC, however we will ask you to complete an application form so that we can start to get to know you.

Your teacher for OMSC is Kristy Arbon, Director of Online Learning for the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, and a Certified MSC Teacher. Kristy has helped develop online programs for the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy as well as InnerKids, and is very excited to be bringing her expertise to this CMSC offering.

Our next programs will begin in June 2016. You can register here.

Program times are:

  • OMSC KA/MC 2016.3 taught by Kristy Arbon assisted by Marcella Cox who will teach around 50% of the program content (Mondays 6pm-8pm GMT/UTC, June 6 – August 8, 2016) – see timezone conversion here
  • OMSC KA 2016.4 taught by Kristy Arbon (Tuesdays 11pm-Wednesdays 1am GMT/UTC, June 7 – August 9, 2016) – see timezone conversion here
  • OMSC KA/MC 2016.5 taught by Kristy Arbon (Wednesdays 2 – 4pm GMT/UTC, June 8 – August 10, 2016) – see timezone conversion here

Fee and Scholarships

The cost of the program is US$500 per person. A limited number of scholarships are available (you can apply for a scholarship using the registration form). Please note that all scholarship positions for the three classes beginning in June 2016 have now been allocated. You may apply again for a scholarship position when the next round of classes become available for registration. Places will be offered in the order applications forms are received. Places are confirmed once payment is received.

Cancellation Policy

Course registration fees will be refunded in full or transferred to future OMSC dates if a cancellation occurs up to 2 weeks before a course begins. A 50% refund or the option to transfer to a future OMSC will be offered if cancelling up to a week before a course begins. No refunds can be offered if cancelling later than a week before a course begins (except on compassionate grounds for extenuating circumstances).

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Kristy at kristy@centerformsc.org.

We hope to see you online soon, and we also hope that whatever your practice is, it leads to more mindfulness and more self-compassion in your day!

Please note: OMSC does not satisfy the training prerequisite for MSC Teacher Training. MSC is offered in-person which means that anyone wanting to teach MSC needs to have experienced it as a participant in the format that they will be teaching it (ie, in-person). CMSC is the only organization offering the official OMSC curriculum at this time.

It was really lovely to meet other participants of the course, and of course to meet the teacher online. I particularly loved the atmosphere of the course, it is very friendly, reassuring and very supportive. I also enjoyed the little group discussions. Thank you!

This program offers a new angle and helps to explore the Self-Compassion much more. I also appreciate to learn how to implement self-compassion in my daily life. I also like a lot the new environment (even though it is an online environment), I find that it is very enriching to be in class with participants from all over the world and to share very precious moments with them.
Natalia – Paris, France

The online MSC is a safe and effective learning environment. This course takes online learning to a new level:-)
Maggie Duggan – Auckland, New Zealand

I felt especially grateful that this course is online and I can still participate. And I could allow myself to lay down on my bed, for the loving-kindness meditation, since I got tired after a while during the session. And this was such an intimate, but secure and wondeful experience, that I could take care of myself, and at the same to not miss the session.
