Representing “Mindful Self-Compassion” and “MSC”
The expression, “mindful self-compassion,” was created to describe the process of bringing loving awareness to our experience and to ourselves, especially when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate. With capital letters, “Mindful Self-Compassion,” or “MSC” refers to the empirically-supported training program developed by Chris Germer and Kristin Neff to help participants cultivate the mental and emotional habit of mindful self-compassion.
“MSC” is a registered trademark in many countries around the world. As MSC becomes increasingly popular, there has been a tendency to use “Mindful Self-Compassion” or “MSC” to describe trainings that may or may not resemble the trademarked program. In order to provide a consistent and recognizable product that shares the demonstrable benefits of MSC, we request teachers and other professionals to consider the following guidelines:
- We ask that teachers do not call their workshops or trainings “Mindful Self-Compassion” or “MSC” unless their program adheres to the MSC training protocol and they are Teachers-in-Training or Trained MSC teachers (as described on the Categories of MSC Teachers page).
- The developers of MSC are honored when colleagues use selected MSC practices in their professional activities but we also ask that the source of those practices be cited according to professional and academic standards. Please contact CMSC for permission if you would like to use MSC practices in a commercial venture such as an online application.
- We request that anyone who wishes to offer MSC practices in more than a cursory manner also takes the MSC Teacher Training. The manner in which MSC practices are taught often has a greater impact on effectiveness than precisely what is taught. Teachers learn in MSC Teacher Training to convey the subtle aspects of mindfulness and self-compassion that cannot be put into words and which make all the difference in teaching.
