Upon completion of the 6-day MSC Teacher Training program (TT), participants are considered Teachers-in-Training and may advertise themselves as such, but they are not yet Trained MSC Teachers until they have taught their first 8-week program while simultaneously participating in ten online consultation sessions (described below).
Trained MSC Teacher
The process of becoming a fully trained MSC teacher in collaboration with the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion requires that Teachers-in-Training (as described above) must teach or co-teach a full 8-week MSC group course while participating in ten online group consultation sessions offered by CMSC. Consultation sessions are hosted by Certified MSC Teachers and include a maximum of six teachers-in-training (at a cost of $400 US for the ten sessions).
Upon completion of these requirements, the Teacher-in-Training can apply for a Certificate of Training from the CMSC. This certificate indicates that he or she has fulfilled the necessary requirements and is now trained to teach or co-teach MSC, and can pursue teacher certification. The bearer can now advertise him or herself as a “Trained Teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion” or a “Trained MSC Teacher.” The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion reserves the right not to grant a Certificate of Training if it is determined that the teacher trainee has not successfully completed the requirements and/or needs further consultation or remediation.
Certified MSC Teacher
Certification is verification of a teacher’s competence whereas the designation of Trained MSC teacher simply recognizes that a person has completed the requisite training activities. This level of training and verification is highly recommended for those who wish to continue teaching MSC and offers a number of opportunities and advantages as well.
The designation of Certification indicates that the individual has been individually mentored by an expert MSC teacher, has received specialized advanced training in teaching MSC, has taught a significant number of MSC courses, and has had his or her teaching reviewed by an expert MSC teacher for competence.
Advantages of being Certified are that the individual can represent him/herself publicly as a Certified Teacher who has received the approval and support of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and the UC San Diego Mindfulness-Based Professional Training Institute. These individuals will be then eligible to offer MSC in the 5-Day Intensive format.
Furthermore, all CMSC Teacher Trainers and Consultation Hosts are required to be certified. Thus, those who may wish to serve in those roles must first obtain certification in order to be considered for these positions.
Certification is granted by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Mindfulness-Based Professional Teaching Institute.
