The Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) Course is an 8-week training programme in developing the skills of mindfulness (that of non-judgemental present moment awareness) and kindness, compassion and self-compassion.
This course consists of a mixture of didactic teachings (psychoeducational topic exploration), experiential learning (meditation and self-reflective exercises) and 30 mins of home practice.
This is a science based program that has been developed by Dr Krisitin Neff and Dr Christopher Germer in 2010 and has had over 400 peer reviewed papers published in scientific journals linking the program with increase in participants wellbeing. These studies have found that by undertaking the MSC training participants experience:
Reductions in:
Negative mind states; Depression; Anxiety; Stress; Avoidance
Increases in:
Positive mind states; Compassion for others; Self-Compassion; Mindfulness; Life satisfaction
These results were maintained at 6 and 12 month follow up with the scores in life satisfaction actually increasing at the 12-month mark. (Neff & Germer, 2013).
