Course Navigation

When we stop to think about the full spectrum of life, if we’re honest, it’s quite hard to face the fact that life contains both extraordinary beauty and inevitable difficulty; it can seem almost impossible to bear life’s bittersweetness. Contemplative practices are one way to develop the presence, courage, and compassion — the inner resources — to face the fullness of life, so at least when there is stress, sadness, loss, and grief — there can also be love and a source of self-support. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is a secular, contemplative method created by psychology researcher, Dr. Kristen Neff, and clinical psychologist, Dr. Christopher Germer, to foster presence, care and support for ourselves when we need it most – in the face of suffering – whether the suffering is our own or that of a loved one. This method has made prominent contributions to the growing body of research on self-compassion – a skill demonstrated to support psychological well-being, optimism, resilience, reduced anxiety and depression, more caring relationships and reduced caregiver burnout.

The traditional, 8-week MSC course will be offered at Indigo this winter by Kate Gallagher, a trained MSC teacher. Indigo teacher – Kate Villwock – will support the course and participants as an assistant teacher. The 8 week program trains participants in building valuable self-compassion skills that can be nurtured and developed for a lifetime. For those who have an interest in continuing their study and practice of MSC, and eventually becoming a teacher of MSC — this is the first step on the pathway. Visit https://self-compassion.org/ and https://centerformsc.org/ for more information about MSC and to sample meditation practices. Please register only if you plan to attend at least 6 of the 8 sessions, as the program builds from week to week. Please note that MSC is not a form of psychological therapy – if you experience acute mental-emotional distress, have experienced a very recent significant loss, or you’re uncertain as to if this program is suitable for you, contact the facilitator katelin.gallagher@gmail.com to discuss further.
