The Short Course on Mindful Self-Compassion (SC-MSC) is a research-based 6-week adaptation of the 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion programme and is designed to help you cultivate the skills of self-compassion with a shorter time commitment and at a lower cost.

It was created by Kristin Neff, PhD, the pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion and Christopher Germer, PhD, a leader in the integration of mindfulness, compassion and psychotherapy.

Most of us feel compassion for our close friends when they are struggling, but when we are struggle we criticise ourselves, turn to unhelpful habits, ignore our needs or run ourselves into the ground. We can also treat ourselves this way even when we are not struggling. Moreover, modern life creates tension, stress and anxiety – symptoms that need our attention and tools to manage them.
Self-compassion teaches us to become a warm and supportive companion to ourselves when we are struggling, failing or experiencing stress. It helps us to meet our own needs, regulate our emotions and motivate ourselves with encouragement.

Burgeoning research shows that self-compassion is strongly associated with wellbeing, resilience, reduced anxiety and depression, healthy habits e.g. diet and exercise, and better personal relationships. Self-Compassion will give you an inner strength that enables you to more fully accept yourself and grow to your full potential.

Fortunately, self-compassion can be learned by anyone, even those of us who did not learn these skills as children. This programme is based on the values of equity, diversity, inclusiveness and belonging. All are welcome!

Meditation experience is not necessary to participate in the SC-MSC. Sessions are between 1 and 1.5 hours and include a short break. Recordings of practices and handouts will be provided.

ABOUT ALEX
Mindfulness facilitator and degree-qualified naturopath, Alex Newte Hardie, was the resident graduate naturopath at the University of Westminster from 2011 to 2013, before she joined the Light Centre in 2013.
During her early years in clinical practice, Alex found that stress, anxiety, self-criticism, shame and other emotions/states to be the root cause, or primary aggravator of her own and her patients’ health conditions. She recognised that these habitual patterns directly caused physiological changes and drive behavioural patterns that diminish the health of the individual.
These experiences motivated Alex to study mindfulness meditation and she completed her Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy teacher training at the start of 2013, and Mindful Self-Compassion training in 2016. She has been teaching courses at the centre (and around London) ever since.
New therapies integrated into her teaching and clinics include Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) , and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
In addition, Alex is the General Health Practitioner at the Belgravia branch alongside her clinical and teaching commitments.
Alex is registered with the General Council and Register of Naturopaths, the Association of Psychological Therapies, the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, and studied with the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and Enter Mindfulness
