An event every week that begins at 3:00 pm on Friday, repeating until May 24, 2019
Having compassion for oneself is really no different than having compassion for others. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported, 9-session, training program designed to cultivate the skills of self-compassion. Based on the groundbreaking research and clinical work of Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness, care and understanding.
As a group of teachers working amongst each other in an academic environment, this course is a unique opportunity to learn with and support each other while we explore how mindfulness opens us to the present moment and how self-compassion brings us what we most need.
Program activities include: short talks, experiential exercises, group discussion, guided meditation and home practices. The goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for exploring how we typically respond when difficult emotions arise and to provide tools for becoming a warm and supportive companion to ourselves. The emphasis of the program is on enhancing emotional resources and personal capacities. The retreat portion of the series is a powerful opportunity for participants to practice and deepen their experience of mindful self-compassion.
This course is designed for MSC in the workplace in an academic setting.
Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC): Together, mindfulness and self-compassion comprise a state of warm, connected presence during difficult moments in our lives. Mindfulness is the first step—turning with loving awareness toward difficult experience (thoughts, emotions, and sensations). Self-compassion comes next—bringing loving awareness to ourselves. MSC is co-developed by Dr. Christopher Germer, a senior adviser of the CHA Center for Mindfulness and Compassion. Click here to read more about MSC!
Open to: individuals with all levels of mindfulness and meditation experience, including beginners.
This course will be co-lead with Susie Fairchild, Trained MSC Teacher

In this course, Emily guides participants in how to integrate Mindfulness and Self Compassion in a real way that has been life-transforming for many. The Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program was developed by Kristin Neff, a pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion (www.Self-Compassion.org) and Christopher Germer, PhD. Research has shown that self-compassion greatly enhances emotional well-being. It boosts happiness, reduces anxiety and depression, and can even help maintain healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise.
Most of us feel compassion when a close friend is struggling. What would it be like to receive the same caring attention whenever you needed it most? All that’s required is shift in the direction of our attention—recognizing that as a human being, you, too, are a worthy recipient of compassion.
In this program, you’ll learn:
A randomized, controlled trial demonstrated that the MSC program significantly increased self-compassion, compassion for others, mindfulness, and life satisfaction, as well as decreased depression, anxiety and stress. Improvements were linked to how much a person practiced mindfulness and self-compassion in their daily lives.
