Mindful Self-Compassion: An Introduction, Oberlin , OH , United States

Martin Thomson-Jones

December 11, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm UTC-8

Course Navigation

This workshop will provide an introduction to Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), an 8-week, 9-session course that will be offered at Solaluna Yoga in Oberlin from January to March. MSC is an empirically-supported training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on groundbreaking research by Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness, care, and understanding.

Self-compassion can be learned by anyone, and it provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with kindness, forgive ourselves when needed, relate wholeheartedly to others, and be more authentically ourselves. Rapidly expanding research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional wellbeing, less anxiety, depression, and stress, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and satisfying personal relationships.

This workshop will be a mix of short talks, experiential exercises, discussion, and an introductory meditation. No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation is required, and there is no charge.

Note: Everyone is welcome. No registration is necessary for this workshop. And both the introductory workshop and the course are compatible with a wide range of religious and spiritual orientations, and with having no religious or spiritual orientation.
