Course Navigation

MSC was developed by Christopher K. Germer, PhD, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy, and Kristin Neff, PhD, pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion. MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. Research has shown that self-compassion greatly enhances emotional wellbeing. It boosts happiness, reduces anxiety and depression, and can even help maintain healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise. Being both mindful and compassionate leads to greater ease and well-being in our daily lives.

“Self-compassion – taking care of ourselves just as we’d treat someone we love dearly. A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change the course of your life.” – Christopher Germer

How do you typically react to difficulties in life? Do you instinctively fight uncomfortable experiences or find fault in yourself when things go wrong? What if, instead, you took a moment to comfort yourself when you felt bad – as you would do for others?

Self-compassion is a skill that can be learned by anyone. It enables participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with strength, kindness, care and understanding.

This course includes activities to building emotional resources with short talks, experiential exercises, meditation, and group discussion.

Research demonstrates that self-compassion boosts happiness, reduces anxiety and depression and can help you stick to your diet and exercise routines. It has also been shown to transform personal relationships. And it’s easier than you think.

Gain essential tools for living fully and wholeheartedly and learn how to:
• Handle difficult emotions with greater ease
• Motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism
• Transform your relationships
• Practice mindfulness and self-compassion exercises in daily life.

Learning to be-friend ourselves, recognizing our common humanity and imperfections and developing the courage to hold our difficult experiences with kindness is at the heart of the Mindful Self-Compassion program. This 8-week course is empirically supported and designed to cultivate both mindfulness and self-compassion skills which provide a powerful tool for emotional resilience.

Rapidly expanding research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, less anxiety, depression and stress, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and satisfying personal relationships. MSC can be learned by anyone. Meditation experience is not necessary to participate in the program.

Notes

Mindfulness and Self-Compassion is a way to ease stress, anxiety, depression and pain while promoting calm, strength and vitality. Mindfulness is the ability to be more aware, to be present so we can standback to develop more perspectives. When we add compassion to mindfulness, we greatly increase the power of transformation and our capacity for happiness. Compassion contains what we all yearn for: feelings of acceptance, comfort, care, kindness and love. What happens when we turn this power onto ourselves? Mindful Self-compassion is a brave new way to care for ourselves that is healthy and uplifting.

Notes

The three key components of self-compassion are self-kindness, a sense of common humanity, and balanced, mindful awareness. Kindness opens our hearts to suffering, so we can give ourselves what we need. Common humanity opens us to our essential inter-relatedness, so that we know we aren’t alone. Mindfulness opens us to the present moment, so we can accept our experience with greater ease.
