The English Language Teacher Guide is updated and reissued each year. The newest English language edition was released on January 12, 2021. You can purchase the latest edition if you have completed the MSC Teacher Training. You may also want extra copies for yourself or for a co-teacher/assistant. A second copy for an (untrained) assistant may be purchased TO USE, but it should remain the property of the MSC teacher and be returned to him/her at the conclusion of the course. Please do not purchase extra copies for any other purpose than teaching MSC.
In this 2021 update, a number of changes were made in the document:
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) โ This topic was separated out as an additional topic in the curriculum. It is โoptional,โ but would be good to include in every MSC class, if possible.
Self-Compassion Break for Shame โ The self-compassion break was adapted for shame to be used after the topic is discussed. It appears to be less emotionally activating than Working with Shame so is an opportunity to give participants a direct experience of the three paradoxes of shame. It is also optional.
Titles โ
-The title of Session 1 was changed from Discovering Mindful Self-Compassion to โIntroduction to Mindful Self-Compassion,โ which is more accurate since half of the session is introducing people to the program itself.
- The title for Meeting Unmet Needs was changed to โAnger and Unmet Needsโ to correspond more closely to the focus on anger while pointing toward discovering and meeting unmet needs with self-compassion. Multiple edits were also made to that exercise.
Workbook References โ The chapters in the MSC workbook that correspond to each MSC session are given in the closing section of each session.
Permissions, Policies and Fair Use of MSC Materials โ The Fair Use of the Teacher Guide section of Policy and Procedures has been shifted to the front of the TG. The Policies and Procedures section at the end of the TG was revised and updated.
Poems โ Two new poems were added, one in Session 1 and one for the Retreat. In coming years, are hoping to include poem and video options that reflect a wider diversity of perspectives and backgrounds.
DEIB โ Edits were made throughout the TG in an effort to help teachers develop a multicultural lens and to make MSC a welcoming space for participants with diverse identities. This is a work in progress for everyone. CMSC will soon offer in-person training in DEIB for MSC teachers.
Copyediting and Formatting โ Two MSC teachers generously applied their copyediting skills to his version of the TG. Lots of tiny changes were made that only pertain to the English version.
The TG is always sold for the cost of printing and shipping and CMSC does not receive any profit from sales of the TG. We have this policy to encourage teachers to always teach from the latest TG.
TRANSLATIONS
There are various translations of the 8-week MSC Teacher Guide (TG) available and in the works. If you click on the drop-down menu below, you will find the digital versions of the languages in which the TG is available.
Translations are accomplished by teams of volunteer MSC teachers and are released when the volunteers have been able to complete this rather large task. Therefore, translations are not always up-to-date and on par with the most recent English publication. If you wish to obtain the most recent version, you may wish to purchase access to the English TG, depending on the year/version of the translation that is available. It is at the discretion of the translation teams to decide when to update their translation.
Please note that some TGs are available as downloadable/printable files while others are available as โview only.โ This distinction respects the wishes of the translation teams and is at their discretion. Please note that you must agree to CMSC non-share policy if you wish to obtain access to either version.
If you have any questions about translations, please get in touch with Markus Bohlmann, PhD, Translation Coordinator for CMSC, at [email protected]
Those translations that are available as downloadable and printable are marked as "dp" in the drop-down menu
