Elke Smeets, Phd, is a certified MSC teacher. She is the director of education at “Allegre”, a thirdwave behavioural therapy institute in Belgium. Apart from her work at Allegre, Elke is working as an Honorary lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. She defended her Phd entitled "Bias for the (un)attractive self: on the role of attention in eating disorders and body dissatisfaction" in 2009. During her post-doc research she became interested in investigating Self-Compassion and Positive Psychology interventions. She developed a three week Self-Compassion intervention for enhancing well-being and resilience among female college students (Smeets, Neff, Alberts, & Peters, 2014). Together with Kristin Neff, she also developed a 6-week online Self-Compassion intervention for "Psychologie Magazine", a popular Dutch psychology journal. Elke is also working as a therapist and coach. Having experienced the benefits of compassion in her own life she is passionate about teaching people to rediscover their compassionate selves. She has co-led an MSC-intensive with Christine Braëhler in Amsterdam and was invited to co-teach at an MSC-intensive with Kristin Neff and Chris Germer in the USA. Currently she is offering 8-week MSC-courses in Belgium. Apart from MSC, Elke was trained in Compassion Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Since 2011, she has been teaching Positive Psychology courses to international students at Maastricht University. Recently, Elke also started providing an 8-day Positive Psychology training program for professionals.
