I have been engaged with compassion-based approaches to mental health and wellbeing since first coming across Kristin Neff's research and Paul Gilbert's compassion-focused therapy in 2004. I see the cultivation of self-compassion as a basic, fundamental component of personal and societal health.

James is Professor of Mental Health and Psychological Wellbeing at the University of Sydney's University Centre for Rural Health. He has been leading Mindful Self-Compassion and Compassion Focused Therapy training programs for health professionals, for local community members, and for organisations over the past 3 years. His training programs in Byron Bay are well attended and regularly get extremely positive feedback. James is also a leading cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) trainer, and has co-authored 4 CBT books to date (see below). He is currently co-writing a 5th book, Experiencing Compassion-Focused Therapy from the Inside Out: A Self-practice/self-reflection Workbook for Therapists with Russell Kolts, Chris Irons and Tobyn Bell.
